Document Checklist

Asylum Application (I-589) Document Checklist

Document checklist for Form I-589 asylum applications, declaration evidence, country condition records, identity documents, translations, and witness support.

An asylum documentation checklist should organize Form I-589, identity and entry records, passport pages, I-94 records, a detailed personal declaration, country condition evidence, translations, witness statements, and any medical, psychological, police, or community records that support the claim. Asylum timing and strategy should be reviewed with a licensed immigration attorney.

Core packet

Start with the signed I-589, identity records, entry records, family details, address history, and translations for non-English documents.

Declaration evidence

Connect the personal declaration to country reports, witness statements, medical records, photos, messages, or other supporting records.

Timing review

Check the filing deadline, current USCIS instructions, annual asylum fee rules, and attorney review needs before submitting.

Official Sources To Check Before Filing

Use these official pages to verify current form rules, filing posture, fees, processing-time data, and category limits. This page is a planning aid, not a filing decision.

  • USCIS Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal

Check the current form edition, filing rules, fee notices, and required fields.

  • USCIS Form I-589 Filing Instructions Tool

Use the official tool to check where and how an affirmative Form I-589 may be filed.

  • USCIS Asylum

Review affirmative asylum process guidance and preparation topics.

  • USCIS G-1055 Fee Schedule

Confirm the filing fee, filing category, and fee exemption or fee waiver posture before filing.

Application Materials

  • Completed Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal

Asylum is generally subject to a one-year filing deadline with limited exceptions. Get legal review if timing is close or disputed.

  • Copy of passport (all pages including blank pages)
  • Two passport-style photographs (2x2 inches)

Taken within the last 30 days, white background

Application Materials (continued)

  • Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record

Download from i94.cbp.dhs.gov or include paper copy if available

  • Copy of any visa used to enter the United States

Identity Documents

  • Certified birth certificate with English translation

If unavailable, submit a sworn affidavit explaining why and any alternative ID

  • National identity card or other government-issued ID from home country
  • Any travel documents (refugee travel document, laissez-passer, etc.)
  • Marriage certificate and birth certificates of dependents included in the application

Supporting Evidence of Persecution

  • Country condition reports (U.S. State Department, UNHCR, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International)

Focus on reports relevant to your specific claim (religion, political opinion, ethnicity, etc.)

  • Detailed personal declaration describing persecution experienced or feared

Be specific with dates, locations, names, and details because this is the most important document

  • Medical or psychological evaluation reports documenting trauma

Reports from licensed professionals carry significant weight

  • Police reports or complaints filed in home country
  • News articles, photographs, or videos documenting persecution or country conditions
  • Membership cards, letters, or other evidence of political, religious, or social group affiliation

Witness & Expert Support

  • Sworn affidavits from witnesses who can corroborate your claims

Include witness contact information and their relationship to you

  • Expert declarations on country conditions or cultural practices
  • Letters from community organizations, religious leaders, or advocacy groups
Check current USCIS Form I-589 instructions and asylum fee rules before filing, including annual asylum fee requirements for pending cases.
