Document Checklist

Fiancé Visa (K-1) Document Checklist

Source-backed checklist for Form I-129F and K-1 fiance visa preparation, including U.S. citizen petitioner records, proof of meeting in person, relationship evidence, intent to marry, consular interview documents, and current USCIS and Department of State instructions.

A K-1 checklist should separate the USCIS Form I-129F petition stage from the consular visa stage. Organize the U.S. citizen petitioner proof, prior marriage terminations, proof the couple met in person within 2 years unless an exception applies, relationship evidence, intent-to-marry statements, and later embassy records such as police certificates, medical exam instructions, and financial support evidence.

USCIS petition packet

Prepare the current I-129F, citizenship proof, prior marriage records, passport-style photos if current instructions require them, and a current filing-fee source check.

Two-year meeting proof

Use travel records, passport stamps, boarding passes, hotel receipts, dated photos, and attorney review notes if a meeting exception may apply.

Consular stage records

After petition approval, organize DS-160 records, a valid passport, police certificates, medical exam instructions, interview appointment records, and financial support evidence.

Official Sources To Check Before Filing

Use these official pages to verify current form rules, filing posture, fees, processing-time data, and category limits. This page is a planning aid, not a filing decision.

  • USCIS Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiance

Check the current form edition, filing location, and petition evidence for K-1 preparation.

  • USCIS K-1 Fiance Visa Overview

Review the USCIS steps for the fiance visa process before planning supporting documents.

  • U.S. Department of State K-1 Visa Overview

Check consular-stage requirements, interview preparation, and visa processing notes.

  • USCIS G-1055 Fee Schedule

Confirm the filing fee, filing category, and fee exemption or fee waiver posture before filing.

Petitioner Documents

  • Completed Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e)

Use the most current version from uscis.gov

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship (birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or valid U.S. passport)

Only U.S. citizens can petition for a fiance visa. LPRs are not eligible.

  • Copy of valid passport (biographical page)

Petitioner Documents (continued)

  • Passport-style photographs only if current USCIS instructions require them for your filing situation
  • Divorce decrees, annulment orders, or death certificates for all prior marriages

Both petitioner and beneficiary must prove all prior marriages were terminated

Beneficiary Documents

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond intended entry date
  • Certified birth certificate with English translation

    Get certified copies, not photocopies

  • Police clearance certificate from each country of residence after age 16

Must be recent. Check specific country and embassy requirements.

  • Medical examination results (completed at U.S. embassy-approved physician)

Do not open the sealed envelope. Bring it to the consular interview.

Relationship Evidence

  • Proof of meeting in person within the last 2 years

Flight itineraries, passport stamps, hotel receipts, and boarding passes

  • Photographs of the couple together (with dates and locations noted)
  • Communication evidence (call logs, text messages, video call screenshots, emails)
  • Travel receipts (flights, hotels, gifts sent internationally)
  • Money transfer receipts (if applicable)

Intent to Marry

  • Signed statement of intent to marry within 90 days of entry to the U.S.
  • Wedding venue reservation, wedding planner contract, or other wedding plans documentation

Strengthens your case but is not strictly required at the I-129F stage

  • Engagement ring receipt or engagement announcement
USCIS fee source: Check Form G-1055 or the USCIS fee calculator before filing Form I-129F.
