Document Checklist

Citizenship & Naturalization (N-400) Document Checklist

Source-backed checklist for Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, including identity, green card, residence, travel, tax, family, court, and current USCIS filing records.

An N-400 checklist should organize the green card, identity records, residence and physical presence history, tax records, travel log, marriage or military records if applicable, court dispositions for any arrests or citations, and the current USCIS online, paper, fee, reduced fee, or fee waiver instructions.

Online or paper filing

USCIS generally allows online or paper N-400 filing, but reduced fee or fee waiver requests must follow current paper filing instructions.

Residence and travel proof

Prepare address history, travel dates, passports, tax records, and physical presence notes for the statutory period that applies to your case.

Court and exception records

Collect court dispositions, interpreter or accommodation records, N-648 materials if applicable, and attorney review notes for sensitive eligibility issues.

Official Sources To Check Before Filing

Use these official pages to verify current form rules, filing posture, fees, processing-time data, and category limits. This page is a planning aid, not a filing decision.

  • USCIS Form N-400, Application for Naturalization

Check the current form edition, online filing option, filing instructions, and eligibility materials.

  • USCIS Naturalization Interview and Test

Review the interview, English test, civics test, and retest process before preparing documents.

  • USCIS Exceptions and Accommodations

Check age-based English exceptions, disability accommodations, and Form N-648 related guidance.

  • USCIS G-1055 Fee Schedule

Confirm the filing fee, filing category, and fee exemption or fee waiver posture before filing.

Identification Documents

  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card), front and back copy

If your card is expired, include a copy anyway

  • Passport-style photographs only if current USCIS instructions require them for your filing situation

Many applicants file online and should follow the current N-400 instructions for photo requirements

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license or state ID)

Identification Documents (continued)

  • Current valid passport (all passports used during residency)

Application Materials

  • Completed Form N-400, Application for Naturalization

Use the most current version from uscis.gov

  • Form G-1145, e-Notification of Acceptance (optional but recommended)

Residency & Physical Presence Evidence

  • Federal tax returns for the last 5 years (or 3 years if married to U.S. citizen)

    Include all W-2s and schedules

  • Utility bills, lease agreements, or mortgage statements showing address history
  • Employment records covering the statutory period

Travel History

  • All passports with entry/exit stamps covering the residency period

Include expired passports because USCIS reviews travel during the statutory period

  • Detailed travel log listing all trips outside the U.S.

Include exact dates, destinations, and purpose of each trip

Special Circumstances

  • Marriage certificate (if applying under 3-year rule as spouse of U.S. citizen)
  • Proof of spouse's U.S. citizenship (birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or passport)
  • Military service records (DD-214, NGB-22) if applying under military provisions
  • Court dispositions for any arrests, citations, or criminal records

Disclose everything. Failure to disclose can create denial risk.

USCIS fee source: Check Form G-1055, reduced fee rules, and fee waiver instructions before filing Form N-400.
